Newly Discovered & Immediately Exploited Windows Vulnerability

A serious new remotely exploitable Windows vulnerability has been discovered in a highly-used and readily exploitable Windows component. The SHIMGVW.DLL is used for rendering Windows Metafiles, but can reportedly also be invoked whenever Windows attempts to display non-metafile images as well. Click here and go to grc.com to fix the problem until Microsoft has a patch. Also listen to the Security Now podcast to learn more. Update: Microsoft has a patch for it now. It also has been added to Windows Update.

USB 2.0 upgrade

I needed to upgrade for the iPod with video that I hope to get sometime this month. I think I am going with the black model. It just looks so cool. I wish the earbuds came in black.

Xbox 360 at Wal-Mart

My local Wal-Mart has the xbox 360 out on display. Well it is behind glass and you can't play it. No games are in sight. And the 360 was in preview mode. But it was my first time to see it in person. I also believe they had the wired controller hooked up to it. I guess they have not figured out what to do with the wireless controller yet.

Uupdate: Here are some pictures of the xbox 360 at a EB Games Store. My Wal-Mart does not have anything like these setup. Ours was behind glass where they sell the games and there was one controller.

Hotmail “Kahuna”

I’m beta testing the new hotmail code named “Kahuna“. It has a very clean and easy interface. It looks better than the old hotmail. It is setup almost like Outlook. You have 3 windows. And you can view your mail in the 3rd window without leaving the page. I like that alot. I however do not like that they have 2 large ads at the top and on the right. The one on the right is messing up the view of HTML mail. There is no way to resize or scroll the message window. That or I have not found it yet.

Sold

I sold my 3rd Gen. 15 GB iPod to a friend tonight. I am so happy that I don’t have to deal with ebay seller fees now. I probably will be getting my new iPod next month. I still have to decide on what color to get.

Tuesday, October 18, 2005

New iPod

I’m getting the new iPod with video. I haven’t ordered one yet. I have to sell my 3rd gen. 15 GB on ebay first. And I had to buy a new pair of earbuds to sell with it. I just can’t sell an iPod without earbuds. I will have my shuffle to listen to when my iPod sells. I also have Quicktime Pro now to convert movies to the new iPod format. I am also going to have to buy a USB 2.0 card for my computer. The main reason I want a new iPod is because of the color screen. It is just cool. I don’t really see me using the video function alot. But it is cool. I can’t wait.

Videora iPod Converter

I bought quicktime pro on a whim. I did not know that you could not convert other formats with it. And when I tried to convert a large vidcast file it took forever. Today I was reading digg.com and found Videora iPod Converter. This program is very cool. It converted a 124MB XviD file under 10 minutes. And the quality is not bad at all. So if you don’t want to buy quicktime pro and you are looking for an easy way to convert other formats that will work on the iPod then download this program. Update: Does not support .m4v Update 2: Does not look like this program is going to work with the iPod on converting video to play on it. You have to use Quicktime Pro anyway.

HotSpot

My friends brought their laptops over last night and they both have built in Wi Fi in them. So I go to turn on the Wi Fi not expecting it to work and what happens it connects. I live next to a fire station. I am guessing that it is coming from there. But I am not sure. I did a test to see how fast it was and it came just over 1000 kbps. That is so much faster than my DSL. But I don't have a wireless rounter and hell would have to freeze over before any one would buy me a laptop.

NASA scrubs launch

NASA scrubbed the launch of the space shuttle Discovery on Wednesday because of a faulty fuel sensor. [CNN.com]

The Return to Flight

Discovery is scheduled to lift-off today. Commander Eileen Collins and her crew are scheduled to lift off at 3:51 p.m. EDT. I wish all the crew a good lift-off. You can watch all the fun here. The Return to Flight mission is the 114th Space Shuttle flight, and the 31st flight of Discovery. [NASA]

I remember that day.

Celebrate Freedom 2005

I was at SouthFork Ranch on Saturday for Celebrate Freedom. It is the largest free Christian outdoor concert in America. Artist like Rebecca St. James, Caedmon's Call, Toby Mac, Michael Tait, Avalon, Newsboys, and a lot more. Actor Stephen Baldwin was there with his ministry Livin' it. It was a really great day. They even called a soldier who is over in Iraq and put it over the speakers. It was very tear-jerking. But it was great. I truly do love America and my Freedom. I would not trade it for anything. I took some pictures. I was going to take my video camera, but decided not to. Next year I am going to take it for sure. I did capture some small videos with my digital camera. We decided to stay for the whole thing this year. They have a large Fireworks display at the end. It was good, but not worth staying for the whole thing next year. We did not get home until 5 am. We usually leave early so we get home at a normal hour. But it was a fun day.
